Some Music Hall songs helped to shape social values. J B Geoghegan was the chairman of the 'Star' Theatre in Bolton, his song 'Down in a coal mine' celebrated and highlighted the work of the miners. The song expresses the value of this job to the nation, and as a consequence the image of the miner whose work had been generally ignored or looked down on, was improved. He used the song to encourage audiences to be proud of their work, themselves and of the nation as a whole.
