Parody was strongly ingrained in Victorian humour and this was expressed in an exaggerated way in Music Hall songs. 'Elsie from Chelsea' is a romantic and sentimental song set in an everyday situation of a tram ride in the city of London. Using locations and characters that audiences could recognise was a popular technique for many writers and performers. Audience participation was also an important aspect in Music Hall entertainment and people were encouraged to jeer and cheer at performers who would shout and sing their humorous retorts.
