Etiquette guides recommended that girls learn to play the piano for the emotional, moral and physical benefits of practising for many hours. Learning to play the piano was a way for women of the leisured classes to fill their time and some became outstanding musicians. Romantic themes were popular as were songs with poetry about beautiful scenery and countryside. The illusions created by these lyrics were not challenged and thus stereotypical images of people and places quickly developed.
