Joe's Birthday part 04
Composer: Hunt, G. W.
Much can be discovered about life in the 19th Century by studying popular songs from the time. Although much exaggerated for entertainment purposes, audiences could relate to the tales and recognise familiar situations. This song shares with the audience the experience of travelling on an omnibus, visiting a fair and riding on a donkey at a seaside resort. One of the most popular stalls for Victorians was the coconut shy or 'cock-shy' where the reveller threw sticks at coconuts and could win prizes such as pin-cushions and snuff boxes.
