Audiences visited Music Halls to be entertained so contentious and political topics were often dealt with in a comic way. The character of 'John Bull' was used to personify a typical Englishman or even England herself. He was usually represented as a stout farmer in high boots and a top hat, and often wearing a union jack waistcoat. Here the history of England is presented to the audience in a glorified way, praising the British people for defeating the 'Romans, Danes and Saxons'. It is a patriotic song and encourages pride and self respect.
