Charles Godfrey made his Music Hall debut in Birmingham, after being inspired by Arthur Raynor who had seen him acting on stage, and soon developed his act working as a 'Lions Comique'. He would saunter onto the stage in a velvet suit and a large top hat, swinging his silver topped cane. He performed three songs in three different halls each night, and earned as much as £5,000 a year. He was over worked and carried too much of the 'hi-jinx' of his act into his private life and died aged just 48.
