Oxford Street part 03
Composer: Hall, Frank
The illustration shows a gentleman raising his hat to a lady in Oxford Street. The entertainer is 'The Great Mackney'. He was 'blacked up', wearing face paint to appear to his audience as a black performer (also known as 'minstrels'). Mackney was a talented performer and was well known for accompanying his singing by playing a fiddle. Many songs parodied love and commented on society and this song is no exception. Mackney laments his luck when he meets a girl and falls in love, proposing to her on the spot, only to be heart broken when she runs off with another man.
