Patriotic songs such as this one convey a love of the country and those fighting for it. Songs praised the bravery and heroism of characters like Nelson embellishing their stories with dramatic prose and mournful tunes. The real lives and conditions of those in the navy were ignored. Life was harsh, whipping was still common place and press gangs were sent out to conscript men. Songs about these conditions would not have been 'entertaining' so instead the pluck and courageousness of the sailors was exaggerated and characters became larger than life.
