Trafalgar Square was created as a monument to the triumph of the superiority of British naval power. Laid out between 1829 and 1841, London's most famous square was named after the Spanish cape where Nelson won the naval battle against Napoleon in 1805. This was the culmination of a long campaign and was the last great sea action of the period. Songs about the West End of London were always popular, they generally date from the 1890's when the Bohemian lifestyle there was notorious.
