Portsmouth Harbour has a long history of use as a port, Richard I constructed a dock there as early as 1194. Henry VIII established his 'Navy Royal' here in 1415 and Portsmouth became the main harbour used by His Majesty's Ships and the 'navy civil'. This is a patriotic Music Hall song. Although wives and sweethearts are saddened to see their loved ones go they must be brave and give the sailors courage. The lives of the men in the forces were glorified, they were admired as they gave their lives to protect the nation.
