Many Music Hall songs were patriotic. This song, performed by Kitty Clare, pays tribute to the soldiers in the army who are fighting for their country. She sings of their heroics at battles like Waterloo and Alma, as well as those in Lucknow and Sudan. The Battle of Alma was fought on 20th September 1854, when Russian troops tried to prevent the British troops advancing over the Alma river during the Crimean War. The illustration shows the soldiers wearing traditional battle dress and in fact the kilt wasn't banned from the battlefield until 1940.
