The Bristol Quadrilles part 04
Composer: Von Der Mark, Bertram
Bristol has been a port since the middle ages when trade was developed with Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal, however by the 19th Century the docks had started to decline and it was decided that they needed to be redeveloped. To be able to pay for improvements, heavy charges were imposed on those using the docks and this drove trade into rival ports such as Liverpool. In 1848 the Council bought the Docks Company and started on a series of changes, improvements and repairs. Initiatives like 'Free Port Day' for which this song was written, were introduced, the rates were reduced and trade through the port increased.
