The 1800s saw an explosion in musical instrument manufacture, hire purchase, combined with a thriving second hand trade led to a fall in the price of instruments. Owning an upright piano was possible for the middle classes and the upper working classes. 'Moore and Moore' in Bethnal green and 'Archibald Ramsden' of Leeds were well known hire purchase firms where piano's could be rented for a small deposit. Thus the parlour or lounge, became the centre for family entertainment. Music such as 'The Taff Vale Quadrilles' was popular with the whole family.
