This illustration, by Alfred Concanen, shows the deck of a steam boat which is sinking, throwing passengers in all directions. Tower Bridge can be seen in the background. The character 'William Jones' sets sail for Australia leaving his sweetheart behind, the boat sinks and she fears he is drowned. The Music Hall audience get their happy ending when Susan Jane discovers that he has survived and he returns home to her. Concanen was one of the most prolific and most versatile of the music illustrators and was as famous for his fantastic moustache as he was for his illustrations.
