The Host of the Lion and Lamb part 04
Composer: Lee, Alfred
Pubs were an important aspect of life in the Victorian town, they were often located on street corners and had colourful signs and boards to entice people to drink there. Many pubs even gave their name to areas of London, such as 'The Elephant and Castle', 'Angel' and 'Swiss Cottage'. Some areas tried to ban pubs, like Pimlico and Bloomsbury, but domestic servants on aristocratic manors provided a ready drinking market and numerous pubs were built on the edge of estates. Many songs were about public houses, Music Halls had their beginnings there, in saloon bars where entertainment was provided as well as alcohol.
