That's How Our Poor Have To Live! nos.7088-14
Composer: Read, John
Some Music Halls songs were about social conditions, dealing with the concrete experiences of their audiences. They were not aggressive political songs attempting to create reform but were intended to create sympathy and understanding of social problems. Some of the city's poor lived and worked in terrible conditions with few opportunities for improvement. This illustration shows a family of seven living in one room, the mother is sewing piece-work and the eldest child is making matches. The father is broken, he has his head in his hands and can see no way out of their desperate situation.
