Song titles were often inspired by fashion trends of the time. Southend on Sea expanded rapidly during the Victorian period and became a well known seaside holiday destination. Many different types of entertainment were available for holiday-makers, from music hall variety and dancing, to a zoo, aquarium and seafront promenade. Workers especially would have looked forward to their time off and the developments of the railways meant that affordable and relatively speedy journeys were available. Excursions to seaside towns were organised by Sunday Schools, temperance societies and employers.
