Music hall songs often deal with conditions of everyday life, the songs are full of references to current events and real places, and to make the songs seem more natural and realistic the vernacular is often used. Thus we can get an idea of working class conditions, lifestyles and attitudes, even if they are exaggerated and satirised for entertainment purposes. Comic songs celebrated the life of the 'ordinary' man and woman, which must have had an impact on the self esteem and public impression of the working classes. Characters like costermongers, chimney sweeps and factory workers were celebrated which helped create a more positive image.
