The Hungry Man From Clapham part 04

Composer: Hunter, G. W.
Medium: Lithograph
Date: 1887

This is an unusual music hall song because it is obviously nonsense, and is not based on a local character or well known stereotype. At the end of the song the man, who is from Clapham, is so hungry that he has eaten his mother in law and a fireman's hose. He then eats himself and disappears from sight, never to be seen again! It is loosely based on the experiences of the poor who would have been eternally hungry and who often wouldn't have been able to pay for a meal to abate their hunger.
