The Talkative Man From Poplar part 01
Composer: McEvoy, James
Victorian songs are full of references to current events and real places, especially those centred around London, as this would have given them a sense of realism. However many, especially the audiences, saw Music Hall not as a type of social comment or as a way of campaigning for improved conditions, but purely as a form of entertainment and escapism. Audiences only wanted to be amused and thus, songs like this would have been popular. A man, living in Poplar, is a chatterbox and talks so much that he eventually drives people mad and is killed by a frustrated listener.
