Illustrated sheet music has been sold in England since the 17th Century but it was after the invention of lithography and later chromolithography that they really flourished, and by this time many of the covers were more complex than the music inside. Specialist music shops spread across cities during the 19th Century and it was estimated that there were over 100 in London alone. The windows of the shops would be festooned with covers and the more brightly coloured or intricate designs, like this one stood out.
