The quadrille was a square dance, which originated in France. The name means foursome and the dance was made up of five sets, danced by four couples, who started by facing one another, making a square shape on the dance floor. The different pieces could either be specially composed or adapted from existing melodies. To encourage people to buy the music sheets, titles contained popular or fashionable people and places drawn by popular artists, in this case it is Southampton drawn by T H Barnett.
