The East Somerset Railway Valse part 06
The growth of the railways, transforming both trade and leisure activities, was one of the most important developments of the 19th Century and was widely celebrated throughout popular culture. The East Somerset Railway or 'Strawberry Line' was opened to Shepton Mallet on Tuesday 9 November 1858. It was extended to Wells in 1862 and by 1870 the line reached Yatton through the Cheddar Valley. It opened up the West Country to tourists and trade flourished as fruit and vegetables could for the first time, be transported quickly and easily to London.
