The City March part 07
Composer: Burlington, George
Sheffield had developed a reputation for excellence in cutlery making during the 17th Century and this laid the foundations of it's industrial future. In 1859 Benjamin Huntsman discovered how to make good quality steel in large quantities, this was a major break through and Sheffield became the world's foremost steel manufacturing centre. The population of the area grew and it became clear that improvements needed to be made to social conditions. Housing regulations were introduced, as was street cleaning and gas lighting, and a police force were employed to patrol the streets. This song was written in 1893 to celebrate Sheffield being raised to the dignity of a city.
