Three Cheers For The Tyne part 01
Composer: Lambe, John
This song is dedicated to Alexander Bartleman, who was mayor, from 1922-23. The words praise the industrial nature of Tynemouth, the commerce in coal, coke and lead. However during the 19th Century it was as a holiday resort or a day trip destination, that Tynemouth became popular. Visitors were encouraged and lodgings, bathing machines and amusements such as 'The Aquarium' and 'The Winter Gardens' were built. The opening of a railway line provided a link with Newcastle and this made the town even more popular. A police force was even introduced to enforce modesty on the beaches.
