Many music hall songs relied on traditional stories that their audiences would have known and would have been able to join in with, either in the chorus or with the shouting and heckling of the performer. This song tells of the myth of King Canute who was so sure of his powers that he thought that he could control the sea, and command it to retreat. The story of King Canute has been misrepresented as he actually wanted to demonstrate to his subjects that the King did NOT have power over nature. He risked his life as well as the life of his subjects to demonstrate this.
