The pier was a Victorian innovation that transformed seaside resorts. They offered musical entertainment, penny amusements and inexpensive food. During the summer season, when the upper classes were holidaying at the coast, they were one of the most fashionable places to be seen. This music tells of a 'swell', a fashionable and flamboyant young gentleman, who promenades along Southsea pier, receiving many admiring glances from the 'ladies'. Lamenting the fact that the summer season is ending he marries but promises to return the following season.
