Industrial work during the 19th century was often hazardous. Nowhere was this situation more true than in coal mining. There was little machinery; the tunnels were very narrow; miners often had to lie on their backs and use their picks to strike the walls; and there was constant danger of the mines collapsing or flooding. Many were sympathetic to the coal miners situation, and the music halls were seen as an ideal medium to remind the audiences that the coal they used everyday came from a mine and that the miners risk their lives everyday to collect it.
