The Manchester Ship Canal was one of the greatest engineering projects of the Victorian period, with 5 sets of massive locks, 7 swing road bridges, 5 high level railway viaducts and the famous swing aquaduct at Barton. It made Manchester one of the major ports of the world, contributing considerably to the prosperity of the area. Music Hall songs celebrated success like this and helped to make people proud of their achievements, illustrating how important their work was to the future of the nation.
