The Lights Of London Town part 07
Composer: Diehl, Louis
Music Hall songs parodied desires and aspirations of their audiences and encouraged them to laugh at their own secret ambitions. London was seen as a grand and wealthy place where fortunes could be made. Gas lightening was first exploited by William Murdoch, a British Engineer who lit his cottage with gas lamps as early as 1792. The first public street lighting was in Pall Mall in 1807, and by 1813 even Westminster Bridge had street lighting. London was a dense city located in a valley and so these illuminations could be seen for miles around and this is still the case today.
