The inspiration for popular music was often a fashionable tourist destination. The cover for this song includes a photograph of Blackpool pier, with the funfair in the background. The 19th Century saw a rise in the number of visitors to this area, it has been estimated that there were as many as 250,000 holiday-makers each year. From the mid 1800's, Blackpool started to develop as a resort, assembly rooms were built, as was the promenade. The funfair was seen as entertainment for the working classes, being a means of venting physical energy, and the pier became an exclusive promenade for 'quality' visitors.
