The Hero Of The Thames part 06
Composer: West, Charles C
Many docks were built in London, during the 19th Century particularly down river from Tower Bridge. Trade increased enormously and goods such as sugar, cotton, spices and tea were carried up and down the Thames on a daily basis. It was a time of transition and steam-powered vessels travelled up river alongside traditional barges. The 'seasoned tar' refereed to in the lyrics of this song was one of the many barges that carried the goods. They were 'hero's of the Thames' because of the amount of goods that were transported in this way.
