The Victorian period saw a drive towards a more controlled society, this was demonstrated by the introduction of rules and regulations to sports, the emphasis changing from physical exercise, to moral and spiritual discipline. Employees encouraged participation and observation of games as it encouraged feelings of solidarity in the workforce. Before 1800 there were no rules for football, there were no referees and it was considered an extremely dangerous game. By 1863 handling the ball was banned and referees were introduced to control the game. It was not a fun job however as is clear from this song. An ambulance is kept on hand to take him to hospital at the end of the game
