The most popular subject for music from the 19th Century was that of leisure. There was an explosion of available leisure activities, for the first time people had time and money to spend as they pleased. The development of the railways meant that day trips to the country or seaside were possible and for those who could not travel so far, the Thames was ideal. Hiring rowing boats and punting up the Thames to towns such as Richmond or Kingston became popular, especially for courting couples who would get to spent some time together alone.
