It is important not to stereotype Music Hall performers, traditionally they are seen as members of the working classes but this was not always the case. Alfred Vance or 'The Great Vance', as he was known, was from a middle class background. He was part of a group known as the 'Lions Comiques', who were the first great stars of the Music Hall. Their stage personas focused on 'the man about town', and would have been immediately recognisable by the audiences. It has been suggested that the success of this song actually popularised the word 'zoo' in the English language.
