Volume 1 title page
On this specially printed title page Beudeker announces: "The Theatre of Dutch Pleasure Gardens. First Part displaying the royal palace of Loo and Dieren, Voorst, Rosendael and the celebrated Zorgvliet outside The Hague. Assembled in the year 1718."
Early atlases were often called theatres because the maps and views could be regarded as stage sets displayed before the reader. Beudeker gives precedence to the palaces owned by the Stadholder-King, William III.
