Lindisfarne Gospels - St Mark f. 93v

The second evangelist, St Mark, is accompanied by his traditional
symbol, a lion. Like St Matthew, he is shown in clothing apparently
copied from a late classical model. The lion is a great deal more
lifelike than most early medieval animal figures. The appropriately
tawny golden colour of its coat also suggests some direct information
about the real beast.
