Psalm 87, f. 157v

This is the first example of the pages executed by the foremost artist of the Luttrell Psalter. The artist appears to have designed and painted this section without help from an assistant, apart from some minor colouring work. The marginal grotesques reach new heights of fantasy, and the colours used are softer and more varied. Textures and facial expressions are more expertly rendered.

The marginal illustrations on this page seem to refer directly to the text.

This version of Turning the Pages does not require the Shockwave plug-in. It foregoes the interactive animation that lets you 'virtually' turn pages and brings you the same high-quality images of our greatest books in standard web pages.

You can listen to the audio files on these pages with Windows Media Player
