Feasts of St. Baltidis and St. Wulsin, Pages 412 and 397

These pages come from the final part of the missal, the Sanctorale, containing the prayers to be said on saints' days. The saint is often characterised by a lively 'portrait' miniature, such as the one on the left-hand page depicting St. Baltidis, the seventh-century Anglo-Saxon slave girl who married King Clovis II of Gaul (part of modern-day France). This particular aspect of the illuminator's craft was developing into the art of the portrait miniature in this period.

The other page contains the feast of the local saint, Wulsin, who introduced the Benedictine Order to Sherborne in 998.

This version of Turning the Pages does not require the Shockwave plug-in. It foregoes the interactive animation that lets you 'virtually' turn pages and brings you the same high-quality images of our greatest books in standard web pages.
