Christmas Day, Pages 36 and 31

These pages, containing the masses for Christmas Day, are two of the most sumptuously decorated in the entire manuscript. Christmas is the first major festival to appear in the Temporale - the largest section of the missal with the text for the seasonal feasts of the year. This is the first time that the missal's two patrons, the abbot of Sherborne and bishop of Salisbury, appear together. As elsewhere in the volume, many of the images represent 'typology' - the practice of using a passage from the Old Testament to prefigure or predict the events of the New Testament.

This version of Turning the Pages does not require the Shockwave plug-in. It foregoes the interactive animation that lets you 'virtually' turn pages and brings you the same high-quality images of our greatest books in standard web pages.
