Caring for your treasures

All materials deteriorate. This damage is increased by the effects of light, pollution, poor handling & storage, incorrect temperature & relative humidity, mould and pests. Preventive measures can extend the useful life of paper-based materials and are usually much more cost-effective than interventive measures taken to remedy damage after deterioration has taken place.

The Preservation Advisory Centre has published a series of advisory booklets on basic preservation guidelines, caring for photographs, caring for bookbindings and more. These can be downloaded free of charge from their website.

“The surest way to preserve your books in health is to treat them as you would your own children, who are sure to sicken if confined in an atmosphere which is too hot, too cold, too damp or too dry”

William Blades, The Enemies of Books, London, 1880.
