Interviews

Variety Performers

Sir Oswald Stoll, a teetotaller, wanted to provide great theatres for 'family entertainment' in contrast to the brash eating and drinking establishments of the Music Hall. Although, the word 'Variety', as we know it, was used as early as 1841, the variety entertainment, which was the 'people's theatre' became really popular in the 1920s. These interviews are with performers, their children and managements, and focus on the period 1945-1968, however, many of these people also worked before or after those dates. The interviews give an insight into what it was like to be 'in Variety', the day to day living and working in this popular form of entertainment.
