Fundamental. is a photographic archive of the masonry of the buildings within the City of London occupied or owned by financial institutions. The architectural use of the rocks refers to the idea of solidity and a primordial presence, evocative of geological ages. Banks display in their architecture the values of safety, reliability and stability they strive to demonstrate. Recently, as we question our trust in capitalist models, our confidence in the financial system started to crackle at its foundations. If you see the stones you won’t see a bank anymore. This project was made possible through the geology books and journals in the British Library Science collection.
