The RIC ia a virtual research environment that will provide an integrated suite of tools for finding, creating, managing, sharing and disseminating all the types of information associated with a research project. It aims to address the 'pain points' of research information management.
Scientific researchers create and use an unprecedented amount of digital information. It is a major challenge to find simple and effective ways of managing, sharing and preserving this information. Collaborative research can amplify these challenges.
The RIC will cover all aspects of the research lifecycle: idea discovery, reviewing the literature, finding and collaborating with colleagues, sharing knowledge, seeking funding, organising information, writing papers, preparing presentations and preserving research findings.

It is being developed in response to the scientific community’s need for intuitive, customisable tools that enable researchers to:
- Access and organise key resources
- Perform efficient, federated searches
- Annotate, share and discuss information
- Keep up-to-date on funding opportunities
- Support collaborations through project-based workflows
- Organise research projects in a secure, on-line environment
- Manage outputs, such as funding proposals, papers, presentations and datasets
