Text version: Tagging datasets in Explore the British Library

Here is a step-by-step guide to tagging records, particularly dataset records, in Explore the British Library.

NOTE: Prior to Mon 14 Jul 2011, Explore the British Library was called Search our Catalogue. Although the site looks a little different, the process for tagging items remains the same.

NOTE: In order to tag any records in Explore the British Library you will need to log on – only British Library Reader Pass holders and registered Document Supply customers. For information on how to log in and other basic functions of Explore, see Explore the British Library training videos.

  1. Click Notes & Tags on the record you wish you tag.
  2. On the left-hand side of the tab that appears you will see tags that you have added to a record (My tags) and tags added by other users (All tags).
  3. Click Add / remove tags to add a new tag to this item.
  4. A new window will open that allows you to type in a new tag (in the text box) or select one from the list of tags that you have used for other items.
  5. Once you have entered or selected a tag, click Save and then close the window.
  6. Tags can be removed from items by deselecting them before saving.
  7. Your new tag will appear in Notes & Tags – you may need to refresh the page before it is displayed.

Tags will help you to group and surface items you wish to use and find later.

  1. In the Notes & Tags tab, click on a tag to perform a search that filters for all items with the tag.
  2. Tags can be searched from the Explore the British Library homepage by selecting In user tags from the Anywhere drop-down menu.

You can also add notes to items.

  1. Click Notes & Tags on the record you wish you tag.
  2. Click Add a note.
  3. A yellow text box will appear for you to type in your comments.
  4. You will need to check the box I agree to the Library's Terms and Conditions before your note can be added.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. You can edit or remove your notes using the links. Note that your name will appear next to your notes.
