Citation in Science: Don't quote me on that!

A discussion with Prof. Tim Birkhead, 27 May 2008

Professor Tim Birkhead, an evolutionary biologist at Sheffield University, gave a provocative introduction to the issues around citation in science.

Tim entertainingly reviewed several reasons why citation is often not carried out correctly, ranging from ignorance to indolence. This is of course important in and of itself for the record of science, but also has great implications given the contemporary focus on bibliometrics for evaluation of research.

The audience was comprised of a range of academics, funders and policy-makers and publishers which generated an animated discussion.

You can read Tim's article on citation in Times Higher Education and put forward your point of view on the dedicated Nature Network forum.
