Originally known as the British Central African Protectorate, the territory was renamed Nyasaland in 1907. It joined Northern and Southern Rhodesia in 1953 to become the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Nyasaland became independent in 1964 and was renamed Malawi. The unicameral legislature consists of the National Assembly.
