These pages provide guidance to family historians on how to use sources from the India Office Records such as occupational descriptions or types of documents (wills, pensions or ecclesiastical records for example).

Entry papers for officer cadets 1789-1860: L/MIL/9/107-254. Name of cadet, birth/baptism details, parentage, educational testimonials. Index shelved in the Reading Room. Queen's India Cadetships 1858-1930: L/MIL/9/292-302. Application forms giving details of the candidates.

Sandhurst cadets commissioned onto the Indian Army Unattached List 1901-1940: L/MIL/9/303-319. Index 1902-1914: Z/L/MIL/9/3. Application forms giving details of cadet and his family background, certificate of age.

Wellington and Quetta cadets 1915-1918: L/MIL/9/320-332. Application forms giving details of cadet and his family background, certificate of age. Each volume contains an index.

Some of the above indexes of cadets entering into military service 1775 to 1939 are searchable via Access to Archives (A2A), the Archives Network for England hosted by the Public Record Office. (To search, click on the grey button 'Search A2A' which leads to the search form. In the box for 'Keyword', type in the surname of the person; in the box for 'Location of Archives', click on the drop-down menu and select 'British Library India Office Records'. Then click the red button 'Search'. )
