A wide range of fine and historic bindings can be found in the British Library, both in discrete specialist collections and dispersed individually throughout the Library.
The departmental collection of binding records relates primarily to bindings of western European printed books.
The rubbings and photocopies of a large number of bindings within the Library's collections are kept in file boxes, which are arranged by country and then date.
A card index of binders and owners, arranged in alphabetical order, provides information on selected British Library bindings.
Access to this reference collection is restricted. To view these records, please apply in advance to the Curator of Bookbindings.
