  • J2852-J2871 Decorated bookcovers for Penguin books (Hans Schmoller art director).
Taken from a letter from the secretary of Mr Schmoller of Penguin Books, Mary Clare Havard, addressed to Mrs Hirsch:
"We usually let the printer have a small sample of the pattern- say 2" by 2", and he makes from this one negative, reduced to the required size, of each colour (generally two or three). From one of these negatives he makes enough bromides to make a complete paste-up of the cover, and any lettering needed is also pasted in. This complete design, the 'drawing' design, is photographed, and the joins are all painted out on the negative. From the remaining negatives the necessary amount of positives are made and pasted up on to sheets of plastic which are placed over the 'drawing' design to ensure that the register is correct. These patched-up positives are then photographed and the joins painted out on the negatives, the positives are made. Plates are then made from the resulting complete set of positives, one for each colour....All of our Poets and Score patterns have been reproduced by litho, but none of them have been made from woodblocks"
